The Mee Canyon Alcove is a beautiful and unique feature in the Colorado Plateau. It is believed to be the largest alcove in the plateau, measuring 300 ft deep, 200 ft wide, and 80 ft high. The trail down to the alcove is not for those with a fear of heights or new hikers. This trail is about 4.2 miles but is strenuous as hikers will scramble across rock faces, hug cliff edges on canyon walls, and have limited shade from the afternoon sunlight.
The alcove was created by a stream cutting into the rock over a period of time. The trail down to the alcove features some wooden ladders to help hikers get down. Overall the alcove itself is a sight to behold. It offers great shade after hiking all day in the hot sun, and a creek running through the alcove will help to cool hikers off even more. Thre are great photo opportunities throughout the trail and the alcove. Many who take make this hike say that it is one of their favorites in the area. Local outdoors groups offer guided hikes to the alcove, though they will require a fee.
