Fault Caves
Golden, Colorado
2.1 miles SW of Golden, ColoradoThe Fault Caves are located in Golden, Colorado just off of Highway 6. These caves (unlike most that were created by wind, water or lava) were created from movement in the fault line that caused small openings throughout the mountain.
From the highway cavers and spelunkers must go west and take a short, steep hike up to the entrances of the cave. The trail is well traveled and usually clear to those visiting.
The Fault Caves have many openings and tunnels of varying sizes. Some parts can be walked through, like a narrow hallway. Other parts of the cave must be crawled through carefully and are not much wider than your body. All the tunnels and openings are tight and winding. These caves are complicated and should be explored only by experienced cavers, or those accompanied by experienced cavers.
Head lamps are the recommended source of light for this cave system, as use of both hands to crawl down, through or up the cave is needed.
The cave walls have a lot of graffiti and cavers frequently find broken glass and other litter throughout the caves. The caves are dry and dusty, which has prevented the formation of stalactites, stalagmites and other decorative formations.
For those looking for an exciting, adventurous and challenging cave to visit the Fault Caves are the perfect destination.
