McKinney Butte Lava Tubes
Gooding, Idaho
8.2 miles NW of Gooding, IdahoAlso known to the locals as the Spider Caves, the McKinney Butte Lava Tubes is a tunnel formed by lava flows from long ago. Similar to many lava tubes with an entrance broken from the side of the tube, the Spider Caves fork immediately after entering. There is a gate blocking the tunnel to the right which requires permit from the Shoshone BLM Field Office to go beyond the gate.
[McKinney Butte] is a young Idahoan volcano and is located outside of Bliss, ID. It is classified as a broad shield volcano-erupting last ~52,000 years ago. Pillow basalts can also be found at the McKinney Butte stop! But wait, there is more. At ... McKinney Butte there are also lava tubes! They are located off of Highway 46, and can be explored by anyone! They survived the Bonneville Flood (17,400) and the Bliss Landslide (1993), & are quite large! Courtesy of Hannah Spero on Twitter
