LIke many of the trails found throughout Glacier National Park, Siyeh Pass trail takes hikers through beautiful meadows and forests, complete with top-of-the-world views. The trail begins at Siyeh Bend, where hikers can park their cars and head out onto the trail. The trail ends Sunrift Gorge parking, and a park shuttle can take hikers back to their cars at Siyeh Bend.
From the trailhead the route goes about 2.5 miles through some forest and then opens up a little bit. At this point the trail splits and hikers will want to go west and head towards Preston Park. Preston Park is one of the most beautiful meadows in Glacier National Park, and is the perfect stop to take a quick break. From the meadow, Mt Siyeh stands tall over 10,000 ft. When leaving the meadow, the trail becomes a series of switchbacks up Matahpi Peak towards the pass. This is the high point of the trail and with views of several different drainages. A common route to take is through Baring Creek, which has plenty of wildflowers and wildlife sightings. Mountain Goats and Bighorn Sheep are not uncommon here and make for a special treat for hikers. From this area, hikers will also be able to see Sexton Glacier and might end up hiking through several snow fields, depending on the time of year.
Continuing along the trail will bring hikers to Sunrift Gorge, right along the banks of Saint Mary Lake. Take a rest here, enjoy the views, and wait for the shuttle for a quick trip back to the car.
Like most places in Glacier National Park, bears are active during certain times of the year. Bear sightings are common and hikers should take precaution by caring bear spray with them.
