Sand Beach is just one of the treasures visitors will find within the beautiful Acadia National Park. This little beach is only about 290 yards long, and is situated between the mountains and the rocky shores of Mount Desert Island's east side. In order to access this little beach, visitors can take the Park Loop Road south of the entrance fee station in Bar Harbor, Maine.
The beach is filled with sand full of fragmented sea shells, created by thousands of years of the pounding surf. The temperature of the ocean does not normally exceed 55°F, which can be quite cold for some, but on a hot summer day can make quite the difference. Surrounding the beach are multiple trails that take visitors to some of the nearby cliffs and mountains. Some of the more popular hikes are Beehive trail, Ocean Path, and Great Head trails. Most of these hikes can be accessed from the Sand Beach parking lot and are not considered to be too difficult.
