Lakes Trails Fishing National Park

Hike

Ribbon Lake Trail is a 6-mile trail that leads hikers through beautiful meadows, past colorful lakes and beside Yellowstone River. This trail gives hikers a beautiful view of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone and of several thermal areas.

The trail starts on South Rim Road. Parking is available at Uncle Tom’s Point and the trailhead can be found on the southeast side of the parking lot. This is an easy trail with very little elevation change and well established paths.

Ribbon Lake Trail passes two main water features, Clear Lake and Ribbon Lake. Clear lake is known for its clear water that appears to be a bright, blue-green due to thermal activity. Clear Lake is a thermal area, hikers should remain on designated trails in this area. Ribbon Lake is surrounded by forest and coated with lily pads. These two lakes provide hikers with two unique views of Yellowstone National Park.

Once past Ribbon Lake hikers can return to thr trailhead using the same trail, or by using South Rim Trail along the Yellowstone River. Returning using South Rim Trail Provides hikers with a stunning, up close view of the Canyon formed by the river.

Yellowstone is famous for the wildlife that can be seen in the park, Ribbon Lake Trail is no exception. Hikers in this area often see bison, bears, various bird types and other exciting animals. Hikers should be sure to keep a safe distance from any wildlife.

Ribbon Lake Trail is closed during the winter and spring due to snow.

Hikers looking for a hike with a variety of views will enjoy hiking on Ribbon Lake Trail. Hikers have the opportunity to connect with nature as they experience the beauty of the forests, meadows, lakes, rivers and canyons along this trail.
