Located near the town of Bishopville South Carolina, Lee State Park was built in the 1930s as part of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the Great Depression. It was built as an outdoor recreational opportunity for residents of Bishopville, surrounding areas and for the state of South Carolina. The Park was made in 1935 and further construction was continued for 4 years; picnic benches and the loop road were the main focus of the project, while other elements of the outdoors such as cabins, camp sites, etc. were added afterwards.
Along the Lynches river that runs through Lee County, Lee State Park is a unique recreational environment that caters to all age groups.
Over 2,800 acres of mostly bottomland hardwood forest wetlands that hikers can walk and take pictures, Lee State Park has 25 standard campsites close to the entrance and also sites for bigger groups to enjoy the wildlife; within the upper part of the park, there are 23 equestrians campsites and a few closer to the entrance.
In the upper part, there are 12 miles of different equestrian trails and horse stalls; there's even a place in where kids can go horseback riding and catfishing. As you go up towards these horse stalls, there is 1 mile of easy hiking trails for those wanting to take short walks around the area and two picnic shelters rented for single or group gatherings.
There are 4 springing artesian wells (check to see if it's safe to drink first) and an education center for learning more about the history of Lee State park; also, visit the exhibit hall for viewing of historical artifacts. For the environmental safety of Lee State park, there is a wet laboratory for inspecting potential hazards in the area and testing the waters to make sure it's safe for swimming.
