Swim

Chautauqua Gorge is a very scenic site with a clothing-optional area located near Westfield in the westernmost part of New York. There are several small waterfalls which are very refreshing after hiking on a warm day. There are also small pools for soaking or swimming a few strokes and level space along the creek for sunbathing. Sandals are recommended as you may have to cross the creek a number of times along the way.

CAUTION We received this email report "A 10 year old boy was hospitalized recently (in the last couple of years) for E.coli poisoning contracted from the Chautauqua gorge. you may want to tell your readers not to drink the water." Maybe no longer a danger, but keep your head out of the water to be safe.

CAUTION We received this email caution:” The Chautauqua gorge is a great place to visit, but you should warn your visitors about climbing there. Quite a few people have been injured and killed trying to climb up the loose shale walls of the gorge. Almost every year the local fire departments are called out to rescue people who are stuck too.(Imagine how embarrassing that would be!!) NO PLACE IN THE GORGE IS SAFE FOR CLIMBING! Come visit & have fun, but stick to the paths or the floor of the gorge ."Courtesy of swimmingholes.org
