Hike

Bunsen Peak Trail is a 4.6 mile hike to the peak of Mount Bunsen. This is an out and back trail and is considered moderately difficult  because of the 1,300 foot climb in elevation.  Bunsen Peak is named after Robert Bunsen, the German chemist who invented the Bunsen Burner and studied geysers.

On the way to the top of Mount Bunsen hikers can enjoy the sweeping views of the Mammoth Hot Spring Terraces. This unique perspective from afar is one that you don't want to miss. From the peak of the mountain, hikers have a view of Swan Lake Flats and Gardner's Hole. Visitors at Yellowstone National Park will enjoy seeing an expanse of the park from above. From Bunsen Peak hikers also have a view of the Gallatin Mountains and Yellowstone River Valley.

The trail is only open during the summer and fall months. Grizzly bears are frequently seen in this area. Hikers should be sure to take safety precautions and keep a safe distance from bears and other wildlife.

Bunsen Peak trail is a wonderful hike to add to a Yellowstone adventure. This challenge with its unique views can be completed in under 3 hours leaving plenty of time to explore and hike in other areas of the park.
