Blakely Mountain Dam was finished in 1952 and is located on the Ouachita River. The dam was built to provide hydroelectric power and create Lake Ouachita, which is now a popular recreation area in Arkansas. People here enjoy the rocky and sandy beaches as well as swimming in the water. Lake Ouachita is known for being one of the cleanest lakes in the nation.
Directly by the dam is a popular place to go swimming and scuba diving. With the deep, calm, clean water this is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the scenery. The Blakely Mountain Dam provides an impressive structure to look at, in addition to the forest and beaches that surround the lake. The lake itself varies in its views, sometimes being still and mirror like, other times blue and choppy, and others covered with a light hazy mist.
Fishing, canoeing, kayaking and sail boating are also popular forms of entertainment here.
